This song is the most uplifting song that has been on country radio in the last 15 years. Andrews was basically a one hit wonder, and this was her hit. It's not often that a one hit wonder has a hit that is as meaningful as this one, but Andrews did it! It's also not often that songs | |
like this, which discuss loving and accepting yourself become popular, but this one did. Although riddled with cliches, this song does display a beautiful and powerful message. The chorus,
"I am Rosemary's granddaughter,
The spitting image of my father.
And when the day is done
my mama's still my biggest fan"
makes the song. The intricate details are what makes a song that much more relatable. Andrews' voice captures the voice of the girl in this song perfectly, with the innocence and confidence all in one. The production in this song is beautiful, with loud guitars, but fiddles and the pop influence in the chorus that had been around forever in country music.
In some ways, this song, even though a cliche, set a precedent for songs that came later like "Alright" by Darius Rucker. It showed future artists that somewhat cheesy yet joyful songs could do as well on the charts as the other songs.
I have Andrews' Who I Am album and it disappoints me that some if the other singles on that album like "Helplessly Hopelessly" didn't chart very well. This song however was one of the biggest hits of its year and was a powerful uplifting song that every young woman should listen to.
Overall rating: 3 and three fourths crowns
