The Wreckers were the ultimate country girl group back in 2005. Made up of pop rock singer Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp, The Wreckers released their debut, "Leave The Pieces" in 2006, quickly followed by their debut album, Stand Still Look Pretty. They seemed to pop out of nowhere, but "Pieces" managed to hit No. 1, making them the first female duo since 1953 to have a number one song, followed ten years later byMaddie and Tae's "Girl in a Country Song." With this remarkable feat under their belts, The Wreckers released two more singles that each did progressively worse on the charts before they split in 2008.
"Tennessee" is the third and final single they ever released. Why this didn't do well on the charts beats me. This song is an acoustic ballad about Tennessee, the home of country music. "Tennessee" doesn't just depict the place, but tells a story of a girl who leaves home for the big city and regrets it. Written solely by Harp, the song speaks of "everything being all business" and wishing she were back home in Tennessee with the boy she loved. This is not an autobiographical song, since Harp is from Missouri, but still is a complex, confusing story that makes it necessary to listen to the lyrics over and over again in order to figure out the real story behind the song.
The last song by The Wreckers was one easily forgotten, since it only went up to 33 on the Hot Country Songs chart. But this song is one worth listening to.
Overall Rating: 4 crowns
