Music: Singer/songwriter Maren Morris has landed cuts with stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Tim McGraw, but she has also been releasing her own music for almost 10 years now. She has been known solely as a songwriter for the last few years, but she always had the performing bug. Now, she'll get to perform for huge live audiences, if her career continues to blow up in the way it's projected to. Morris, like Chris Janson, is the independent artist's success story. Morris put her EP on Spotify independently, racked up more than 1 million streams on "My Church," and promptly signed a record deal with Sony. Now the 'On the Verge' country artist for iHeartRadio, and her song now being listened to (and loved) by many, Morris has made it.
Contributions to country radio: Along with showing indie artists that they can make it on radio, Maren Morris brings a soulful country sound to radio. Chris Stapleton has been the male trailblazer of this genre, bringing his soulful version of country music to radio with "Nobody to Blame" and "Tennessee Whiskey." Morris has a more pop influenced sound, but has equal soul and country in her debut EP and single. She shows artists that they can have influences outside of country music and incorporate that into their music without totally betraying the country sound and lyrics that are supposed to be in a country song. "My Church" will not only let people know the kind of songs that country radio should be full of, but is also good music. It's a song that people will blast in their cars, but also appreciate lyrically. It's a very solid addition to country radio.
