Bio: Actress Jana Kramer announced that she was making a country album in 2011, which came with much apprehension. Many celebrities use their success in one area of Hollywood to help them be successful in another area, usually music to acting or vice versa. These ventures usually result in quite negative results, but Kramer broke into country music with a strong debut album, and country radio welcomed Kramer with open arms. Her debut single “Why Ya Wanna” reached No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and her self titled debut album hit the Top 5 on country albums. Her album was met with positive reviews from critics, and Kramer really proved herself as a musician. While juggling acting and music, Kramer released her sophomore record Thirty One in October, full of more pop influence than her debut had, but still maintained it's fair share of country music.
Contributions to country radio: Kramer is another woman (along with Cam) to bring back the ballad on country radio. All of her successful singles have basically been ballads, from “Why Ya Wanna,” to her current Top 20 hit “I Got the Boy.” Many female artists have aimed for upbeat, pop influenced songs as potential big hits, and Kramer has made songs like that (“Said No one Ever,” “Love,") but the songs she has released have all been songs that one would predict not to do well in a radio format. But her songs far have done remarkably well for ballads. The only other artists that can pull off successful ballads so well are Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert, but they are already fully established. Kramer is still starting out, and she's hit big with ballads already. She's setting a standard, that songs don't need to be super upbeat, or straight pop songs to do well in the radio setting. Good songs are good songs. And sometimes, even with the state of country radio right now, a good song prevails.
