Morgan Myles has pulled a full musical 180. Her debut self titled EP, Morgan Myles, available on iTunes, is an alternative, rocky project. She was a full-on rock star, showing off her powerful vocals, often screaming in her songs. There were slight hints of country influence throughout the record, but not enough for the EP to be labeled as country. Two years later, she's gearing up to release a country/soul album. It's a drastic change in styles, but a change mostly for the better, as shown in this song.
The lead single of her upcoming debut album, Miss Morgan Myles, this song is a bit less Janis Joplin and a bit more Carrie Underwood than Myles' previous music. Although not full of many traditional country instruments, this song has a unique mix of soul and country influences, creating a crossover hit. The cliche stop of the production at the word 'stop' is cringe-worthy the first listen, but this is actually one of the few times when that cliche actually works well. Lyrically, this is a destined hit. Myles is a symbol of a strong woman, telling her man that she's never going to take him back. Feminists and most female country fans will appreciate the role she takes on.
Her vocals have been toned down a bit, closest to how they were in "Wicked," a sultry track on her last EP. They are more commercial, and still powerful, but she doesn't go quite as all out as she has in the past. In some ways this is a good thing, because now her music can appeal to more audiences. But she has lost a bit of the power and badass quality that her old music had. Most likely that side of her will reappear again in the full album. Even so, this is a strong track, and one that will lead all fans to buy Miss Morgan Myles when it comes out.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
