Cam's next single to country radio, following the surprise hit "Burning House" is another song that doesn't quite seem suited for country radio, but that's what Cam is good at, taking songs that don't work on radio and somehow getting a hit out of them.
"Mayday" is one of the standout tracks on Cam's debut major label record Untamed, and beginning to hear it on country radio will be such a blessing. The song itself speaks of a relationship that needs to be over, but there is a resistance from one person in that relationship to let it go. Cam plays the heartbroken girlfriend, who feels like she's drowning in the relationship, prompting the chorus, in which she sings, "Mayday, mayday, this is an emergency." "Mayday" is the oldest song on Untamed, and co-writer Tyler Johnson had the idea even before him and Cam began working together in 2010. The lyric video is similar to that of "Burning House," but instead of using fire as the backdrop, this one uses water, continuing the nature metaphors.
The obvious follow up to "Burning House" would have been a more radio friendly song on the record, like "Want It All" or "Half Broke Heart." But in the past, going with the grain hasn't helped Cam on country radio, as seen when "My Mistake" flopped. "Mayday" is a solid song with emotional delivery that really is representative of the 'Cam Country' sound.
