Anjelia Pelay's EP, The Heart Decides is set to come out soon, and this song, "Superman" is the second single from that EP. With this track, Pelay brings all of the perks of her past singles together to create a song better than anything she has ever done before. In her cover of Tom Petty's "Walls", and then the release of her single "Kiss My Ass", Pelay went on the opposite ends of the spectrum with two completely different tracks. With "Walls", Pelay showed her soft side, her country folk influences, and her ability to tap into her sentimental part of her. This song also showed off Pelay's vocals and introduced the industry to her unique, sweet voice. But Pelay turned the tables with the southern rock influenced "Kiss My Ass". Pelay brought in an edgy quality not shown in "Walls". "Superman" is a change up for Pelay. It's not a country folk ballad, but it's also not southern rock. It's more just straight up country, but with the powerful vocals she displayed in "Kiss My Ass", as well as the rawness shown in "Walls".
The slow build up of this song is masterful. The beginning is piano and acoustic guitar, but the slow addition of more instruments makes the chorus booming and triumphant. But, the best part if the song is at the end of the bridge. After the booming guitars and belting of the main part of the bridge, Pelay slows it down with just acoustic guitar accompaniment. She sings, "you were the one", but her voice slightly breaking on 'the one', as if the emotion of missing this person is getting the best of her. There's a vulnerability in this note that isn't often found in music due to the overproduced quality of most singers voices, but is a quality Pelay's vocals possess.
The verdict: Pelay is her best when she mixes her two influences for a perfect country crossover song. She has such an incredible sound, and I expect that her EP will be filled of songs like this. I'm excited to hear what she does next.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
