Songwriters in Nashville scene often write a variety of music — not just country music. Take a look at Natalie Hemby. She’s written some of Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town’s biggest hits, but she’s also written songs that have been cut by Kelly Clarkson and Labrinth. Songwriters are songwriters first, and genres don’t matter when you’re in the writing groove.
LA-based singer/songwriter Mags Duval seems to be the same. Formerly Maggie Chapman, she lived in Nashville for a while and is still a fixture at the seasonal “Girls of Nash” female songwriter show. But she now lives in California, pursuing a pop music career as Mags Duval. I thought she had left the country-ish world behind entirely until I stumbled across this country-pop demo on Soundcloud.
This isn't a new demo, so Duval may have left pop-country to other people at this point. But her voice makes any song sound Grammy-worthy, and this song is no exception. Posted by songwriter Mike Miller, the song is a twist on the classic nostalgia song. Duval sings about a seemingly toxic relationship, but whenever she remembers him, she only remembers the good parts of the relationship. It's an honest, catchy song about having selective memory. Even if pop-country isn't necessarily your jam, this demo is worth a listen.
