Sarah Spencer is a relatively new artist, and sings Americana/bluegrass music with heavy country and pop influence. Her EP Freshman Year is an excellent debut EP. The songs on it individually are all good, but together, they are incredible. The title of the EP also perfectly encapsulates the meaning of the songs and the whole theme and feeling of the record, making everything about the EP even better. The final track on the EP is one of the tracks that really stands out, and is the best song on the EP.
In "Us Someday," Spencer's vocals are flawless. She's a bit similar vocally to Daisy Mallory, with the clear tone, but has she also has the rawness and emotion of singers like Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. Her voice floats from one note to the next, breathlessly converting the story into music. Spencer channels Alison Krauss production wise with this song. The sparse, acoustic production highlights Spencer's signature Americana-Bluegrass-Folk blend, bringing together the whole feeling of longing of the song together.
The lyrics depict a common story of lovers. Being young, but seeing loves that have stayed strong through so much, and now live happily in a little house with children and a sense of commitment and family. In the song, Spencer wants this so badly, like many young women. What makes this song so special is that it has something that many country songs lack these days: pure and true honesty. Spencer is opening her heart to the listener as much as she is opening her heart to her boyfriend. This is the moment that connects with listeners on a deeper level and makes them stay to listen to more and more songs by an artist.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
