Empowering songs for women are a definite trend in country music right now, with all the imbalance on country radio currently. Kelsea Ballerini actually got her first No.1, and the first No.1 by a solo woman not named Taylor, Carrie or Miranda in way too long, by releasing a confident girl-power anthem. But Phoenix-born Chelsea Bain has released a song that's a bit different than the anthems that are sometimes on the radio. A country/rock singer songwriter, Bain just released her second EP, titled after this song.
Sort of a "God Made Girls" 2.0, with better lyrics, and a better vocalist, and less sexism, "The Power of a Woman" is saying how a woman can heal a man when he's down, but in essence, is saying how love can heal. Bain is a born vocalist, and she has a sound that could fit in country or rock music. The song flatters her voice, and she sounds empowered herself, which helps the song convey it's message even more. Bain has a voice that incredibly strong, but has more similarities with Faith Hill's voice than Carrie Underwood's. There is more of a raspy edge to Bain's voice, more than Underwood has ever had. It makes her stand apart from all the other powerful vocalists that sound almost exactly like Carrie Underwood, because Bain doesn't.
I think songs that are empowering like this, ones that speak just about women and the power of love are the best ones. There are all sorts of empowering songs out there, but most of them are saying that you can't let a man step on you. And those songs are amazing. They tell women that the have a right to have a positive, romantic relationship with someone, and that they don't need to settle for any less than that. But women also need to hear that that when they are in one of those positive, beautiful relationships, they also should feel empowered. Being an empowered women is not a thing you do once, it's a lifestyle, whether it's when you are single or in a relationship. Bain emphasizes that point, and sings a song for women in relationships, one that will stay with them long after the song ends.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
