Since the Dixie Chicks broke up, there has been a gap in country music: there have been no country girl groups. They have been plenty of guy groups: Zac Brown Band, Florida Georgia Line, Dan + Shay just to name a few. The only girl group to get any real attention in the past years is Maddie & Tae. Girl groups bring the girl power element to country, which has been missing for a while now. Runaway Angel has the potential to become the next big girl group. They can't replace the Dixie Chicks — they're irreplaceable — but they could be the ones to pave the way for more girl groups and fill that gap in country music.
"Our Story" has the bluegrass influenced production of some Dixie Chicks music used to have, but has different and more youthful lyrical content. The song describes the beautiful love that the girls have found, and how it's so easy to write about it. Lyrically, this song could be a catchy teen pop tune, not unlike "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen from 2012. But the production brings it firmly into country music, another way country music has changed over the years. These three twenty-something women can write lyrics that describe their life, but still have it be a country song.
The best part of this song is the chorus. Throughout the verses, the girls take turns singing parts, but at the chorus, they have the most beautiful harmonies, which pulls the fairy-tale element of the song together. Their voices soar together and create a light fluffy element that makes the song joyful and happy.
This track is nothing groundbreaking, in lyrics or production. But it brings back old country production and makes it new, creating a truly enjoyable listen.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
