One of the most anticipated new singles of this year, along with Carrie Underwood herself with the new single "Smoke Break," Lauren Alaina is finally giving the fans "Next Boyfriend." Alaina released her debut album Wildflower in 2011, and it was a strong first effort. Since then, she released "Barefoot and Buckwild" in 2013, which didn't lead to any album or EP. Now, finally with this song, Alaina has an EP lined up for release in October, a taste of the music she's been working on and a sampler of her upcoming second studio album.
A light, airy country-pop tune, this one doesn't stray from Alaina's usual formula. She's done the country pop game ever since "Georgia Peaches" went big in 2011, and she continues that trend her. The amazing thing about this song is that it shows growth, while still maintaining the light feeling and topic that Lauren Alaina excels at. Not to say that she shouldn't be singing about heavier topics, which she should eventually, but as a lead single, this topic works well.
This track isn't a career-changing move for Alaina, but does mark her solid introduction into the songwriting world. On her debut, she only co-wrote one song, the relatively unknown "Funny Thing About Love," and she did co-write her 2013 single "Barefoot and Buckwild." But with this new single, and this new EP, she is really stepping up to the songwriting plate. Every song on the upcoming Lauren Alaina (EP) was cowritten by her, with cowriters including close friend Emily Weisband, one of our favorites Alex Masters, and pop sensation Meghan Trainor. This is the introduction to her real voice as a songwriter, with an emphasis on the power of her vocals. This song is taking her on the right track, and is sure to give her the recognition she deserves now as an artist, not just as that girl who was the runner up on American Idol.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
