Olivia Rose is young, just about the age Taylor Swift was when she released her debut single, but there is no denying that she has talent, and lots of it. This aspiring country artist from Alberta, Canada has youthful vocals, but strong vocals. Her lyrics are bold, but relatable. She knows what her fans connect to, but she knows who she is as an artist, despite the fact that she is so young. That is such a problem for young artists, not knowing who they are, but Olivia Rose does. Her debut single "Makeup To Mud" is an introduction to her country/pop-rock sound.
For a debut single from a sixteen year old artist, this is incredible. The hook is infectious, the lyrics are relatable, and there's just a hint of that ole Miranda Lambert sass with "you gotta problem with that?" ending the track. A short song, not even 2:30, but it's the kind of song you would play over and over again. The country rock/pop rock production is reminiscent of tracks on Cassadee Pope's album Frame By Frame, with the almost punk-pop element, along with the true-to-country-music lyrics. Additionally, more than any other track Olivia Rose has sung, her vocals are incredible. The last chorus is explosive, with the build up, and high pitched echo-shouts of the lyrics in the background. Production wise, it's a masterpiece.
The chorus is absolutely perfect. It is an ear-worm that will be in listener's heads for hours after they listen to the song. It's simple, with just the lines:
"I'm the kinda girl who goes from makeup to mud,
In three seconds flat.
Yeah, I'm the kinda girl who goes from heels to boots,
Ain't got no problem with that."
Simple, yet completely relatable. Olivia Rose captures the idea that girls want to be elegant, and look beautiful, but also want to be able to kick back and relax, and do whatever they want to. It's a classic country concept, but one that Olivia Rose makes her own.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
