This single and new EP have been teased all summer, and all year, so it is lovely to finally be able to listen to new Ray Gibson music. This year has been a quite exciting and successful one for Gibson, with her being Top 6 in the CCMA Discovery Program and Top 8 for the Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Contest. Her new EP, titled Self-Titled (EP), is her first offering since 2013's Ray Gibson (EP). This single is the first song from this new project released, and was sent to Canadian country radio just last week. "In Your Kiss" is officially Gibson's debut single.
The new EP has had quite a lot of buildup, and just a few days ago it was revealed that Kelsea Ballerini wrote two of the songs on the release, one of them being "Rebound," which she wrote with Black River Entertainment songwriter Josh Kerr. But this is the lead single from the project and it is setting quite a good tone for the EP. "In Your Kiss" is a nondescript song, not unlike songs by many other female artists, but unique all the same. Gibson has a beautiful, intricate voice, and this song emphasizes those qualities in her vocals.
The songs by female artists that get popular these days, with the exception of Cam and "Burning House" are the songs that are bold, brash, and confident. Look at the last few No. 1's by female artists (which is terribly few.) There's Kelsea Ballerini with "Love Me Like You Mean It," the in-your-face confident girl power jam, Carrie Underwood with "Little Toy Guns," the angry peace building rocker, and "Girl in A Country Song" by Maddie & Tae one of the most talked about songs of this last year. There aren't really any middle of the road love songs going No. 1 anymore, at least for women. Gibson seems ready to fill that role. Love is a big topic for her musically, and she could definitely make those kind of songs big again with the sugary pop country outer covering of this track. This song is the perfect candidate for her break out song, and based on its sound, could end up being a big hit in Canada, and in the US as well.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
