RaeLynn was another female country singer to come off of The Voice and like Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery, she was taken under Blake Shelton's wing and was guided into the county music world. Her second single "God Made Girls" is one of the few songs by female country artists that have reached the Top 10 this year, excluding Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert. RaeLynn's vocals are flawless on this track, with her signature somewhat forced country accent, which some don't like, but appeals to me, being a Keith Urban fan all of these years.
There are many critics that have called this song a girl power anthem. I don't see this song as that. To me, it seems somewhat degrading. Every female stereotype ever is shoved into this song, which states that women were put on this world for the sole reason of improving and making men happy. Raelynn sings about girls wearing skirts, girls being the one to flirt, and always wanting to go to church and pulling their boyfriends along with them. Girls are not always like this. As seen during the #LikeAGirl commercial during the Super Bowl last weekend, the general public makes like a girl to mean bad and silly when it shouldn't mean that at all. This song seems to endorse that stereotype of girls.
However, I really like Raelynn. Her debut single "Boyfriend" has that catchiness along with the sassy yet classy declaration, of "Sorry, but I want your boyfriend." Most of her EP is really enjoyable, and she does have a strong voice. This song just doesn't seem to reflect that bold girl belting Jason Aldean on the Voice. If Raelynn makes songs that reflect her personality, which does not seem to be the one described in this song, she will create a 5 crown worthy song.
Overall rating: 3 crowns
