Eileen Carey is an emerging pop country singer and songwriter from Ohio. Based in California currently, Carey has been working on music for a long time now, having just released her fourth studio album, Let it Go. This new single "Faith" is not from that project, but was just released in September. Written by Carey and Kathryn Grimm, "Faith" is a catchy, throwback country pop song that everyone who lived through the 90's and early 2000's country scene needs to listen to.
This song is a throwback 15 years. But even so, she's not classic contemporary country like Garth Brooks or George Strait. She's more country pop, but in a late 90's early 00's Shania Twain kind of way, rather than a Kelsea Ballerini kind of way. This song is a feel good song about encouraging women to have faith in themselves, and not spend all their time trying to get a man's attention. There are so many parallels between this song and Twain's major crossover hit "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!"
Although bringing country music back a few years is usually a good thing, there also needs to be something new added to the old format of country music. Artists that are incredible at doing that like Ashley Monroe, Kacey Musgraves and Maddie & Tae incorporate the classic country elements and do have some songs that sound like they belong on country radio 20 years ago. But there also needs to be something modern added to the music, something that makes it new, and not just a copycat. This song is catchy, fun, and such a throwback, but it's one downfall is that it's nothing new. It's just a Shania Twain remake.
Eileen Carey has potential. She does one thing that many modern country artists don't: she pays due to the greats before her, respects them, and incorporates the best elements of their music into her own. And that's great. But Carey still needs to find what makes her music hers. She will do that in time, but she hasn't quite made it with this song.
Overall rating: 3 and a half crowns
