This song is the "How Could I Want More" of 2015. The hidden gem by a new country artist that gets recognition, and a lot if it. Hopefully his song will get more airplay than Jamie Lynn Spears' song got. However, Guyton has a unique music style. She has the production, catchiness, and stories of Dolly Parton, but the confidence and powerhouse vocals of pop/soul stars like Whitney Houston and Beyoncé. With this track, she brings back older country production but uses R&B elements. Not the elements that Chase Rice and Sam Hunt use, but instead the way in which her vocals sometimes adapt a soulful tone, and how the song's beat reflects ballads by artists like Mariah Carey.
The story in this song is also unbelievably beautiful. It's nice to see women in country music these days standing up for themselves so much. There aren't as many 'I'm broken now that you're gone' songs and there are instead beautiful empowering anthems like this one. The lyrics in this song are so vivid, and it's easy to see the scene playing out.
Guyton hits the vocals in this track out of the park. She has the powerful and confident quality, but also the somewhat vulnerable quality that conveys the storyline so effectively. The production shows off her vocals, but still sets up an interesting and powerful background without overtaking her voice.
Guyton is unique because she's not your typical female country singer. She has a powerful voice that even though has some definite Carrie Underwood influence, is so different in quality and tone. Guyton has taken her idols and incorporated their best qualities into her music without copying them. Her sound is her sound, and no one else's. This song is hers. And no one could have sung it better than she did.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
