Tessa Mouzourakis is one of the youngest, and one of the most talented new country pop singers this year. From Vancouver, Canada, and currently attending the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, Mouzourakis is just a high school student, but quite a talented one.She has a special ear for hooks, and a way with words than many musicians her senior do not have. Her sound is country pop, but has folk and Americana influences, which this track, "Bad Boys" shows. Listening to her EP, this is the track that immediately stood out as representing Mouzourakis' sound and lyrical ability the most effectively.
The story behind this song is nothing new, but this song is different because of the way Mouzourakis approaches the situation. Most songs about bad boys are angry angst-stricken tunes about getting back at the person who broke your heart. This song is different because it's not like Mouzourakis is angry at all. She sings a bittersweet love song, more about how she should have known better, not so much pointing fingers. This song is a warning to girls, to be the smart ones, and not believe that they can make the bad boys good. In some ways, this is about the girl taking charge and not getting caught up in the beauty and intrigue of those bad boys.
Mouzourakis' ability to write lyrics is incredible for someone of such a young age. She sprinkles the simple concept with lyrics that show understanding of relationships far beyond her years. One of the best lyrics is "you had me tied like a worn out string, and you knew my heart was a delicate thing." The recognition of this boy's motives and the way Mouzourakis puts this into words perfectly describes the situation.
The bridge, although, is the part of the song that sets it apart. Mouzourakis sings,
"Mama told me just to stay away, and I didn't listen.
Mama told me just to stay away, and I should've listened.
So why was I surprised, to hear you never loved me all this time?"
This lyric, although simple, captures the feeling of this song so well. When you fall for a bad boy, you realize you've been stupid, and hear the warnings everyone has been telling you over and over and over again in your head. But there's still a part of you, that still sees this boy as an angel. This lyric captures that feeling in a way that few artists could do.
