One half of Sugarland ( or at least he used to be), Kristian Bush has been in the industry for a while. He was part of the folk rock band Billy Pilgrim, has won BMI's for songwriting, and has won countless more awards with Sugarland, including two Grammy Awards, and quite a bit of commercial success, especially with "Stuck Like Glue." This is Bush's first solo single after Jennifer Nettles went on her own solo ventures with That Girl. Compared to "That Girl", Bush's single has already done better commercially.
Bush is a very talented guy. He doesn't have the strongest vocals on the planet, but he does certainly have an interesting voice, and if he uses it in the right way, he could produce a lot of hits. This song is quirky, like his voice, so it fits very well. "Trailer Hitch"is probably the catchiest song on country radio since Kenny Chesney's "American Kids ". It is a pop-country track, with has a slight syncopated beat, and it instrumented by steel guitar and mandolin. The lyrics speak of the common saying that it's better to be happy than to be rich. The hook proclaims that Bush has "never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch." Although the song's intent is to be light and uplifting, it has a somewhat depressing undertone, the lyrics that people look over like "we all end up with nothing" and "you can't take it when you go." Among the inspiring lyrics about living life to the fullest are these pessimistic lyrics about death. It's hysterical that Bush fits these types of lyrics into such a catchy and positive song.
My favorite lyric in this song is "The less I have to worry about, the more time I've got for smiling." This lyric encompasses the whole theme of the song: that if you don't have all of this extra baggage, you will be a happier person. A country song should be like a fable: it teaches you a lesson about life. This lesson is one of the most important lessons one can learn. The Declaration of Independence says we have the right to the "pursuit of happiness." This song teaches listeners that there is no way to achieve that if you're always worrying about the future and money. Listen to Kristian Bush, everybody!
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
