I was introduced to up and coming country singer Austin Webb a few weeks ago when he came to my area for a show, and was advertised on the radio everyday. The night after the show, I heard his track "All Country On You" on the radio which I liked automatically because of the Carrie Underwood reference. It had a normal bro-country vibe that the other songs on the radio by men these days have, but different lyrics, which made him stand out a bit.
But this track, "Slip On By" makes him stand out even more. From the opening chords of this song, with the use of more traditional country instruments, it's clear this track is different than "All Country On You." This song is a mix of Kenny Chesney's "Don't Blink" and "The Good Stuff" in lyrical content. It speaks of living life to the fullest and also loving the things you have now and not taking them for granted. This track shows more of Webb's talent than his other songs did. It shows his power as a singer and ability to sing about deeper topics, and marks him as more than another bro-country guy. This track has production that's reminiscent of George Strait, but also incorporates newer country sounds.
Webb's vocals in this song are spectacular. For guys, the ballads are the places where they can really show off what vocal talent they have. Webb has a strong vocal presence and a strong voice overall, and this story and production complement his voice. Compared to some of the other new male country singers, Webb has one of the strongest voices.
Webb could become the next Kenny Chesney. If he can put out fun tracks like "All Country On You and "Raise 'Em Up" and then put out a song like this, he could create his own No Shoes Nation.
Overall Rating: 4 crowns
