This is my absolute favorite song on Keith Urban's FUSE, and was pumped when it was announced as the next single. As I said in my Grammys 2015 Review, this song is a masterpiece and deserved to win Best Country Performance by Duo or Group. "Raise 'Em Up" has a heartland rock and country folk vibe, not dissimilar to Church's "Springsteen". An Eric Church and Keith Urban duet does not sound like a good combination, with Urban's tendencies towards sweet love songs, and Church's trademark angry songs like "The Outsiders". But this song works better than any other guy duet I've heard in a long time.
The track begins with Urban singing about the small pleasures of life, and then moving on into the chorus. He is mostly backed my acoustic guitar. When Church comes in on the second verse its surprising how well his voice works with the softness and Keith Urban-ness of the song. Their voices compliment each other and make the song even better than it would have been as a solo song, like it was written to be.
This song touches on so many subjects that all manage to connect back to each other. It revolves mostly around the subject of patriotism, but involves so many other topics, like falling in love, having children, singing to your favorite song; just about happiness. The one part of this song that took a while to grow on me was the bridge where Urban sings,
"So you meet someone
The only one
You take her by the hand
Make a stand
By some land
Make some love
And then babies come
Raise em' up."
The almost bluntness of this surprised me at first, but its starting to become one of my favorite parts of the song, because its the lyric that really ties the whole song together. It makes the song beautiful.
Overall rating: 4 ½ crowns
