Old Dominion is a band recently signed to RCA Nashville. It is made up of Matt Ramsey (lead vocals, electric guitar), Trevor Rosen (acoustic guitar, keys, background vocals), Brad Tursi (lead guitar, background vocals), Whit Sellers (drums) and Geoff Sprung (bass, background vocals). They create radio friendly, R&B influenced country rock music that is incredibly catchy. Their debut single was "Shut Me Up", which was played on SXM The Highway. This is their second single, which is more unique and an better song overall.
This track is what would have happened if Sam Hunt and RaeLynn collaborated. In lyrical content, this track is similar to RaeLynn's "Boyfriend", but in vocal delivery, it's Sam Hunt all the way. This track has the heavy pop and hip hop influence that's so popular on country radio today, which will be sure to be a hit.
The story behind this song and the way it is presented is incredibly unique. It's a one sided phone conversation, evident with the first line, and the conversational phrases popped in throughout the track. The guy in the song is blatantly asking the girl he likes to break up with her boyfriend for him. The beginning lyric is hilarious, and is so different it draws listeners in. It goes,
"Hey girl, what's up?
I know it's late, but I knew you'd pick it up
Naw, I ain't drunk
Okay, maybe I do have a little buzz."
In satirical songwriting, this is gold. The track is fun and party and radio worthy and is sure to be the track that really gets Old Dominion noticed.
Overall rating: 3 ½ crowns
