After releasing a few pop-country singles, Regan Stewart has taken a turn to traditional on her new single "Drop Dead Gorgeous." With a modern twist, the song calls back to older generations of female country singers. Stewart took the time to answer some questions for us about her new track and what the rest of 2020 looks like for her.
Queens of Country: This single has a markedly different sound than your past releases, which definitely strayed a bit more into the pop arena. What prompted a switch to a more classic style?
Regan Stewart: Over the past two years I have been writing a lot and really trying to hone in on who I am as an artist. I met with Brandon Hood — my producer — a couple of times over coffee and we just chatted about what my style was, who I am inspired by and what kind of songs I like. “Drop Dead Gorgeous” ended up being the first song we ever wrote together. I remember driving home after the write that day and realizing there was something special to the song and this sound. It was honest and more me than anything I have ever done. It's like I finally let my guard down of trying to be like everyone else and do what they are doing, and just wanted to make music that was me. When we got in the studio, it was effortless. It’s a chill, feminine, traditional country sound with a quirky twist. It just feels like home.
Where do you see your music going right now? Are you planning to stick with this sound?
100 per cent. I am just getting started! This is me to a T though, and I can’t wait to put out more music. I feel like it’s a clearer view of who I am as a person and I can’t wait to explore the sound more.
Who were some of your influences in developing the sound of this track? It feels a lot more Texas country than anything you’ve done before. Is this sound inspired by some specific artists?
I love Kacey Musgraves and how she is undeniably herself. I also grew up on Lee Ann Womack, The Chicks and Deana Carter. All of those incredibly talented women inspired what I’m all about.
What was the process of writing the lyrics and creating the story of the song?
Brandon [Hood] brought in the title “Drop Dead Gorgeous” to our write. I thought it was hilarious and would be such a fun song to sing along too. Every girl has had that feeling when another girl steps in and starts liking your man.
What does the rest of your year look like?
I have more music coming and hoping to also get back in the studio soon! I am so excited for this new chapter and can’t wait to hear what you think about the new songs!
