Country singer RaeLynn is known for her fun personality and her upbeat songs like "Careless" and "God Made Girls." Raelynn's last collection of songs, Me EP, was an EP based on teenage-oriented lyrics and pop country production. The four songs ranged from more mid-tempo love songs to rock influenced jams. "For A Boy," her second single to country radio was a bit of an evolution from the mainly teen pop and country content released on her debut EP but the track still relied heavily on gender stereotypes, something that shouldn't and doesn't fly in 2016.
But "Love Triangle" is different. It's not at the level of "Burning House" by Cam, or "Better Than You Left Me" by Mickey Guyton, but it's an incredible solid country pop ballad. There aren't that many songs in country music recently about divorce, which is surprising since about half of marriages end in divorce these days. And even those songs that do discuss divorce often are from the perspective of those two people who are getting divorced, rather than the perspective of the child. The writers of this track, one of which was RaeLynn took the idea of a 'love triangle' which is a symbol usually used in a romantic sense and turned it around to work in this context.
This song is also completely autobiographical. There are so many children out there in this exact position, and many of them are too afraid to say something about their situation. But RaeLynn opened this conversation up for them, and at the same time made herself a more relatable figure. She emerged as a vocalist on The Voice, but with this song, RaeLynn establishes herself as a songwriter, and a damn good one.
Overall rating: 4 ½ crowns
