Brit Willson's goal as an artist is to get rid of the stereotype that country music is terrible. She understands that most people aren't into music by Loretta Lynn or George Jones, and is using that to her advantage. She's creating a new country, her own kind of country, in which there is more pop and hip hop influence, but continues to have the traditional values of country music: powerful lyrics and songs that mean something. This song, upbeat and cheeky, at first glance does not uphold those values, but the song is actually making a bold statement for female singers everywhere.
This song is an interesting cross between recent Demi Lovato music, and Miranda Lambert. The hip hop influence, electropop undertones, and soulful flair comes from Lovato, while the screaming electric guitar, banjo, and attitude comes from Lambert. There have been a lot of these types of songs recently, starting with Girl in a Country Song (Maddie and Tae), moving to Girl in Your Truck Song (Maggie Rose), and so on, but the hip hop influence and word play in this track set it apart. There's no dropping of different bro country song names in the track, a refreshing break from all of the awkward "Cruise" references. So although this songs topic is a bit overused, Willson truly does make it her own.
There are points in this song that are a little too poppy, points which should have been more country, and it is simple to call this song pure pop. But that is not the issue anymore. Yes, this is much more pop than any of the songs that used to be on country radio, but that doesn't mean that it is not a good song, or doesn't deserve to be on country radio. This song SHOULD be on country radio, to show country audiences that more artists are annoyed by the trend on the radio than just one duo.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
