This is the most hilarious song I've heard in a long time. When I listened to this for the first time, I laughed throughout the whole track. Maddy Newton is a cross between singer/songwriter Jillian Edwards and Kacey Musgraves, with Edwards' practical singing style and Musgraves' quirky lyrics. This track is an example of that, and shows off Newton's vocals, as well as her songwriting. This is Newton's second original release, following the empowering "A Little Too Me" a few months back.
Genre wise, this song creates a new genre: indie country. This song is anything but a traditional country song, and almost indie in some sense. The song is based on acoustic guitar plucking, with piano and some kind of instrument that I can't even place, it's so hipster-ish. Newton spends this song trying to prove that she's not a hipster, and then following the 'not a hipster' declaration with a 'but' and then something she does that makes her a hipster. My favorite lyric is
"I'd like to point my favorite finger at you,
but I won't cause I live passive aggressively.
I'm not a hipster,
cause that's too mainstream."
The track is short, at only 2:08, and does lack some depth, but is an adorable song that teenage girls can sing into hairbrushes.
As much as I like this song, and as much as it made me smile, I can't give it top marks. I've heard two fully produced songs by Newton so far: "A Little Too Me", and this one. The only somewhat serious song I've heard by her is "You and Me". Newton does have a good voice and is no doubt a good songwriter, but I would really like to hear another serious song by her at some point. Light songs are good in moderation, but so far, with her two produced tracks, Newton has made me laugh, and that about it. I hope that soon Newton releases another song with real meaning and depth. "You and Me" is a song I would give 4-5 crowns, but there hasn't been a fully produced version released yet. When Newton releases that song, or releases another song that means a lot to her emotionally and makes me feel the emotion she felt at the time, I'd be really interested to hear it.
Overall rating: 3 and a half crowns
