Most people who have heard of Liz Huett know her because she was Taylor Swift's backup singer for her Fearless and Speak Now tours and did backing vocals on Swift's album Speak Now and on "The Moment I Knew." She left Swift to pursue her own music, and has had some moderate success so far, which will most likely continue to grow. She had a song recorded by Sara Evans which was later released as a single. She has worked with country pop duo Megan & Liz on their now unreleased debut album. Also, she has released many demos on Soundcloud, including this song.
"Never Know" is a folk-pop song with heavy country influence. Huett's voice carries a trace of a country accent, but not much of one. She fits her voice into country music with the heavy country influence on the production but pop based track. The song tells the story of just how you can never know what will happen in life, specifically her having to let go of a man in her life. The song is very upbeat, despite the somewhat depressing content. This trick is used often by artists, to prevent having too many ballads on a record and also for radio appeal. For Huett, this trick worked in her favor, showing off her ability to have strong, sad lyrics work with an upbeat production. The production also make the vocals and lyrics sound more carefree, as if she knows this is a fact of life, that you can never know anything for sure, and is okay with it.
Many Taylor Swift fans were upset when Huett left the band. If Huett ends up producing songs as catchy as this one, I think lost fans would agree it was for the best. Being a backup singer is hard, because there's never any chance to let your talent shine, which Huett has a lot of. This song shows off the strong vocals and talent that was getting hidden behind Swift all of the time. It is now Huett's turn to shine and she will be marvelous doing so.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
