For something a little different and out of the line of the music I usually cover on Queens of Country, I'm introducing you to Naomi Wachira this week. Born in Kenya, but now based in Seattle, Wachira creates intricate world and reggae-influenced folk music with incredibly important messages. "Beautifully Human" is the first song off of her upcoming sophomore album, Songs of Lament, and it's really worth a listen for anyone a bit concerned about the state of our world currently and looking for hope in the darkness.
"Beautifully Human" showcases Wachira's beautiful, crystal-clear voice, and also the incredible passion behind the words she's singing. The song discusses human equality, and for us to be accepting of others differences and embrace them. "I wish we didn't have to prove our worth / and that the world would finally see us as equal," she sings in the second verse. The song, she says, "was born out the many tragic losses we’ve witnessed globally." The power of this song comes from its simplicity of the lyric, and the beautiful and important message behind the words.
As humans, we are constantly comparing ourselves to each other and putting down people who are different than us. But as a human race, it's so important to see people who are different than us and see them as beautiful. None of us is perfect, and Wachira effectively gets that message across in this track. Towards the end of the song, she unites all of us, with the lyrics "So is anyone who can walk / who can talk / who can laugh / who can cry / who can feel pain." We are all beautifully human. This song is sure to spur positive discussion and encourage people to love themselves, and each other.
Overall rating: 5 crowns
