This has got to be the best song Carrie Underwood has released since "Someday When I Stop Loving You" on her Play On album. This track is one of two new tracks on her Greatest Hits album and is the best track on the album by far, even though "Something in the Water" is amazing as well. Released as the second single from that compilation album, this song is sure to quench fan's appetite's for new music from Underwood, who has been halted in that process because of her baby on the way. She leaves the Christian inspired music behind with this track, at least for now.
Underwood brings in arena rock and pop sounds in with her country roots and creates a country pop rock masterpiece. This song is like "Mine" by Taylor Swift 2.0, with no love interest involved. Underwood follows the story of a girl whose parents fight nonstop, as Swift mentions in her hit. But Underwood delves deeper into the story, depicting a girl "in the closet, holding on to that heart shaped locket," attempting to escape the screams of her parents. Underwood uses guns as a metaphor in this song, but it was a wisely chosen metaphor. There are many country hits about pistols and guns, most of them coming from Underwood's fellow Queen, Miranda Lambert. The name of the track pulls listeners in, expecting another "Two Black Cadillacs" but are met by this heartbreaking, almost juvenile song. Underwood pleads, "I wish words were like little toy guns," meaning that they wouldn't hurt anyone, and they were just for show. Underwood takes a common wish of any child, or any person and makes it into a beautiful metaphor that will pull in country radios and enthrall all listeners.
This song will be a hit because of the content matter. Everyone knows how much words can hurt, and this song and Underwood's powerful vocals will bring that feeling to life. Especially right after the 3:00 minute mark, where the music stops and Underwood almost shouts, "No shot from the trigger when you put it" and you can hear the emotion in her voice clearer than anywhere else in the song. It's a magical moment, where you can hear the artist feeling the same thing you've felt before through a note or lyric. This song is magical.
Overall rating: 5 crowns
