The third single from Lambert's fifth studio album, Platinum, is a risk, even for her. Lambert has released some of the most cocky, daring songs by a female artist in country music today, but this song pushes the envelope even farther than she's already pushed. "Wagon" is a cover of folk rock singer Audra Mae's song, but Lambert makes it her own. She "countrifies" it, and adds more emotion to her vocals, and even adds some synth in the background. The song has definite punk influence, leading it to be a cow punk song, the first from Lambert.
The song starts off with, "You only love me for my big sunglasses and my Tony Lomas." Mae took an old children's rhyme and took it to be almost sexual in a way. Lambert owns this song, which only she could do. She has just the right amount of attitude in her vocals to sing this song perfectly. The bridge is the best part of the song, where Lambert repeats the first lyric, but adds,
"I live in Oklahoma
And I've got long, blonde hair
And I play guitar, and I go on the road
And I do all the sh*t you wanna do
And my dog does tricks
And I ain't about drama, ya'll
And I love my apron
But I ain't your mama!"
These lyrics will make listeners laugh out loud, and doubt that she is actually singing what she is singing. Some listeners will be put off by the loudness and the cockyness of the song, and I assume some people will think the song is awful, but it's incredible that Lambert would take such a risk, no matter what the backlash might be.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
