Jana Kramer has been M.I.A. for a while in the country music world. She had her debut album and three singles off of that (Why Ya Wanna, Whiskey, I Hope It Rains) a few years ago. Her debut single became a Top 5 hit. She then released "Love" last June, and then disappeared again, with no music releases and no notifications of future music releases. This song is proof that Kramer is back and will be back for a while. Co-written by Jamie Lynn Spears, "I Got the Boy" is a heartfelt ballad reminiscing about lost first love.
Although written by Spears, Kramer's voice fits the song. My favorite part vocally is when she sings "seems like another world". Her voice trails down at the end, adding softness to the song that is sometimes overtaken by her strong vocals. That is the only problem with this track. There are times when the power behind her vocals fits perfectly, like at the end of the bridge, but sometimes when she is reminiscing, she needs a softer tone. It's an emotional topic, and although this song does range in emotions from reminiscent to regretful to almost jealous, and there are points where a stronger vocal ability works, sometimes it overtakes the lyrics.
The lyrics. The best part of the entire track. There was a list I saw a while back about the songs this year that should make people proud to be a country music fan. This song is one of those for this year. The lyrics in this song are some to be proud of. She remembers her high school boyfriend and sees him now, all grown up, and is not sure which part of him she wants more: the high school boy, or the man.
My favorite lyric in the chorus is: "She's got the future / And I've got the past." It's a beautiful way to put the situation and summarizes the whole song. Kramer's sophomore album, based on this song, will be very good. Maybe she'll come back and begin to take the No. 1's away from the boys!
Overall rating: 4 crowns
