Summer is coming, so people have begun talking about what the 'Country Song of the Summer' for 2016 is going to be. Some people have pinned it as "Somewhere on a Beach" by Dierks Bentley, and now, Cassadee Pope and her management are obviously trying to make her new single "Summer" a strong contender. But Mickey Guyton's new single, "Heartbreak Song" could just be it. The upbeat song with its sing-along worthy chorus already sounds like a song that people are going to blast on a road trip, and it's only been out a day.
First impression of the song is that it doesn't sound like the Mickey Guyton we all fell in love with, but first impressions aren't always accurate. Yes, this isn't a ballad, but you can't deny that it's catchy as hell and would be a fun addition to country radio.
The main point is that her vocals are still incredible, even with the pop-influenced production. Guyton shines the most in the big soulful ballads, but her voice is great even on this song. She has such a specific and unique voice that doesn't sound like anyone else in the country music industry. Yes, she has the power of Carrie, and the twang of Dolly, but her voice is 100% her own. There's no trying to sound like anybody else, which is especially refreshing on a more poppy song like this one.
Mickey Guyton's new song is a pop song with country influence. Following the same vein as "Somebody Else Will" in production and sound, she's gone the opposite route than how she started out her career. It makes sense, after "Better Than You Left Me" didn't do as well on radio as we all hoped, and "Why Baby Why" didn't gain quite enough momentum after the exposure it got on American Idol. She tried to go the country/soul traditional country-influenced route, and it established her as an incredibly talented new artist. But this could be the song that really lauches her into stardom the way "Love Me Like You Mean It" did for Kelsea Ballerini. Radio isn't everything, but it's a lot, and if this fun, fluffy song does well, Guyton will be able to release a full album full of incredible songs like "Safe," "Why Baby Why" and "Better Than You Left Me.' She's just gotta get her name out first.
