It's no secret that even though Haley Georgia has 'Georgia' in her name, she has a track record of making music that's way more southern pop than country. And in the past, as she's been developing her sound, she's put out some definite misses. Don't remind me about "Ridiculous": it's a song we all try to forget ever existed. But with this new single, "Never Mine Nevermind," it seems as though Haley Georgia has developed into an artist to keep an eye on.
As for the writing in the track, these are some of the strongest lyrics Georgia has written in the songs she's released. The hook, "if you were never mine, nevermind" is near genius, and it seems like Georgia is beginning to move towards more serious music after "Ridiculous.' She's not making music that will necessarily change lives, but she's making fun music with good beats, a great banjo line and good lyrics.
Georgia's perspective has developed and grown. Her 2015 mixtape was full of high school-oriented female versions of truck songs, with "Pretty Girls" being the only song that fell outside of that category. This song has personality, but also individuality. Country music has taken a bit of a break from the straight bro-country songs, and with that, it allows artists to try different things. This was something different, and it succeeded.
Today, the sub-genre of country music of pop-country has been expanded with the introduction of Kelsea Ballerini and other artists. These artists, including Dan + Shay and Hunter Hayes create pop-country with generally very solid and smart lyrics, but they don't necessarily appeal to traditional fans. But they're appealing to younger fans, and pop fans. This isn't the music winning Grammys, but it's the music that will carry the younger generation into the genre, expanding the scope and reach of country music.
