So it's the Grammys again. Every year I freak out because it is my second favorite night of the year (see our Instagram for my favorite night of the year). This year's Grammys did not disappoint. I'm going to focus on the country, but here's a quick review of the other key moments.
Best non-country performance of the night: Katy Perry. I'm really surprised I'm saying that cause I'm usually really hard on Perry, but her performance was incredible. It was preceded by a heartbreaking speech by a domestic abuse survivor, which set the bar really high for Perry's performance. She sang the song that closes PRISM, "By the Grace of God." This is the first somewhat Christian song Perry has put out since her Christian rock debut, Katy Hudson. The studio version of this song has a more poppy chorus, but the way Perry performed it with just piano was the most beautiful track she has ever produced. This is what Perry should be singing.
Biggest surprise: Album of the Year winner. As much as I'm sure Beck is a fabulous singer and deserved it, this Album of the Year should have gone to Beyoncé or Ed Sheeran.
Biggest diss: Taylor swift. Shut out for the second year in a row. Although "Shake it Off" did not deserve a Grammy, it was still a surprise that she didn't win anything. Just a note: Swift has not won a Grammy since "Safe and Sound" in 2012. If this isn't a sign that she shouldn't be doing pop music, I don't know what is.
Worst moment: Kanye West. Hasn't he learned by now? The whole Beck controversy is disgusting. And on top of all of that, West overused auto tune on his live performances. You don't do that at the Grammys. You just don't.
Now that that's over with, here's my review of the country part of the Grammys.
Performances: Miranda Lambert had an incredible performance. She killed "Little Red Wagon" with just the right amount of sass and spunk. Her vocals were really incredible, which goes on and off with her. Even though she didn't write this song, after seeing her perform it, its clear that it was made for her.
Brandy Clark sang a song I hadn't heard before, "Hold My Hand". I had never heard her perform live before, and this performance blew me away. She has the country bluegrass folk style that I love, and also sweet lyrics. The backing vocals by Dwight Yoakham worked better than I thought they would too, and the whole performance came together beautifully.
Eric Church's performance was not as good as they usually are, which surprised me. He usually has incredible vocals, but last night, they weren't up to par.
Awards: Best Country Solo Performance went to "Something in the Water" by Carrie Underwood. This was one of the most deserved awards of the nights, although I was a little disappointed Hunter Hayes didn't win for "Invisible". Best Country Duo/Group Performance went to "Gentle on My Mind". I love this song, but I must admit, I wanted Keith Urban and Eric Church to win for "Raise Em UP", because that song is a masterpiece. Best Country Song went to Glen Campbell for "I'm Not Gonna Miss You." I was so happy when I found out he won, because he is incredible to still be making music at his age and in his state. Finally, Best Country Album went to Platinum, by Miranda Lambert. I screamed when she won. Lambert put out one of the best albums over the last year, and it was rewarded, like all fabulous albums should be.
Overall Rating of the Grammys: 3 and a half crowns
