Krysta Nick started out her career with a pop-country album, released in 2012. Despite that label, it did have definite country influence, and it's fair share of rock influence as well, with a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" included. Since then, Nick has now fully embraced her country side. This track is her first country single released to iTunes, and shows a musical departure for Nick. It is also the leas single of her upcoming EP, Dear _____, available on her website today, and coming to iTunes soon.
The reggae undertones along with the fiddle and country accents create a track that is certainly 'easy' on the ears. Similar in content to "Raining on Sunday" by Keith Urban and similar to tune to "Islands in the Stream" by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, this song is a destined hit, if not with radio, then most definitely with fans. This track has the laid back vibe and the pop-influenced production popular today, and also the lyrics about going out in the country and hanging out with the person you love.
The thing that makes this song different and overall better than songs like "Chillin' It" by Cole Swindell and "Looking at Stars" by Kelsea Ballerini, is that this song makes the relationship seem like it's more than just a physical relationship. In the aforementioned songs, there are lyrics like "There's a chance we can get, sure enough, tangled up, laid back and lazy" in the former and "We can talk about forever for a minute, maybe never, just kiss and say nothing at all" in the latter.
However, the relationships in country songs these days are not the relationships that originally drew people to country music. Me at least, I loved that artists like Tim McGraw and George Strait could be so romantic in songs. Nick brings that back. With lyrics like "I like the simple things, all I want is you," "Easy" depicts a laid back yet loving relationship.
With this song, it is as if Nick has found her musical voice finally. She sounds unique, and more into what she's singing than she did with her debut. From the looks of this song, and the other clips on her website, she has found her home: pop-influenced country music, not the other way around.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
