Unfortunately, a lot of women continue to write the same kinds of songs as the ones of the radio, hoping it will result in their big break. (Most likely, it won't.) "Out of Control" by Devon Nickoles is one of those songs. It's not to say that it's a bad song, but it's cliche by now. It's the same. There's nothing new. "We got this one night, one night. Headlights shining down an old dirt road. It feels right, feels right, getting lost with you" is a large part of the chorus. They're also lyrics copy and pasted from any song on country radio right now. And on top of that, it has the cliche pop beat with 'country' instrumentals layered over it, as if trying to cover up the fact that it's a pure pop song at its core.
Nickoles has a new song, "Perfume," coming out in just a few days. Hopefully it will offer up something more than this song does. There's no denying that this song is catchy, and that she has a pretty voice, but there are better ways to be using that pretty voice. Originality is often overlooked with the lack of it on country radio by men, but it really is the thing that results in success.
