It is rare for a country and pop star to work so closely together, like country singer April Kry recording a song that pop sensation Nick Jonas wrote with his father. The country and pop songwriting was traditionally very different, and that still continues to resonate in some country music today. But Kry and Jonas have proved that the boundaries between modern country and pop music are blurrier than one might think. Released just two days before Father's Day, Kry dedicated this track to her Father, with this touching caption under the YouTube video:
I am so thrilled to share this special project I've been working on with you all. This song is based on a true story and I hope this song touches your heart as it did mine. This is dedicated to all the fathers out there, but especially to my dad- Thank you for your unconditional love, support, and spiritual guidance. You will always be my hero.
Even though Kry did not write this song, through this caption and her vocals, she proves that she connects with it so much. She puts more emotion into her vocal performance here than could be found in "Fireflies" or "Beauty Queen" combined. There is something so powerful about this song. The fact that Nick Jonas and his father could write this, and then have a country singer come in and sing it as if this is her life story is absolutely incredible. Kry pours her heart and soul into this track. That is obvious from even the first note.
Genre wise, the boundaries are blurry with this track. It is a piano ballad with the feel of a country song, but is country in the way that Miley Cyrus' song "The Climb" was. But some of the best songs are mixtures of different genres, and it is the sign of a great musician when they can take elements from different genres and still create a beautiful, timeless song.
Kry has shown over the course of her career that she has country and pop flair. This song brings out that pop ballad flair, but also the fact that she can convey so much emotion into a piece not written by her. This song is absolutely beautiful.
Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
