Annie Bosko is one of the more promising new artists, one that seems poised to break out quite soon. Her debut EP Fighter came out in the July of this year, and it is full of gems like the single "Crooked Halo," which received a bit of airplay on Sirius XM The Highway. Also on the EP is the ballad "Fighter," which Bosko describes as "a ministry to people, because everyone is fighting in their own way," and "a banner that we can all carry in those times when we need it most." After releasing a free download of "4th of July" on the fourth of July this year, this is her most recent release.
Country pop crossover collaborations have become more and more common in the last few years. Sara Evans and Eli Young Band have collaborated with Gavin DeGraw. Taylor Swift collaborated with Ed Sheeran when she was still fairly country. Blake Shelton sang with Shakira. Hunter Hayes collaborated with Jason Mraz. At this point in country music, it is not uncommon, especially when that pop act has some sort of connection to country music, which High Dive Heart does. Made up of Nelly Joy, who was once 1/2 of the JaneDear Girls (a country duo that took the industry by storm in the early 2010's), and Jason Reeves (a songwriter best known for his work with acoustic pop superstar Colbie Callait), High Dive Heart is a pop duo destined for stardom. Billboard Magazine recently named their song "Vintage" a hit of tomorrow. But this pop duo and Annie Bosko came together to create this fun summery track. A slightly mismatched pairing, but effective all the same.
There are a specific kind of country tracks that artists like Kenny Chesney, Jake Owen, and Zac Brown Band have made popular: the slightly Latin and reggae flavored beach tunes. This is one of those. It is a different sort of classic country song, but instead of being about tailgates and tanlines, it's about the beach, drinking, chilling, and tanlines. Bosko mixes pop beats with country instrumentals on this addicting tune, bringing in High Dive Heart's pop folk sound along with her country roots.
As a summer song, this is pure gold. It has the sing along quality, and the beachy vibe perfect for road trips and blasting from the radio. It does not quite match up to "Crooked Halo" and "Fighter" in quality, but it is sure to be a hit, at least for the rest of the summer.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
