With her new single "Every Little Thing," Carly Pearce has found the sweet spot between modern production and more classic country sounds. She's played with both before, with the more acoustic old-school sounding "Black Sheep" on her EP, and then her most recent release, the firmly pop-country "Dare Ya." This new song is a mixture of the two, and is a song to be named when talking about how country music should and could be evolving into.
But genre isn't the thing to be focusing on when listening to this song. The writing is what makes this song stand out. The first verse of the song is a list, of all of the things that Pearce's ex left behind, and all of the memories that she can vividly remember. She can still smell him, taste him, hear him, remember everything about him and that relationship that they lost. The writing gets the most interesting in the second verse, when Pearce sharply contrasts between her remembering everything from that relationship, and the man forgetting the simple promises he made her: "Guess you forgot what you told me, cause you left my heart on the floor," she sings at the start of the verse. She remembers every little thing, and he doesn't remember anything.
Simplicity and honesty are the two qualities that make the best country songs, and the bridge nails these two right on the head. Pearce sings,
"They say time is the only healer,
But God I hope that isn't right
Cause right now I'd die,
to not remember every little thing."
The incorporation of the saying that 'time heals all wounds,' and the almost angry stance she takes on that saying is a real, raw emotion. And as always, Pearce's vocals beautifully convey the sentiment behind this heartbreaking ballad.
"Every Little Thing" has incredible lyrics, beautiful vocals and a modern appeal. This is a special song. There is an incredible amount of music being released every day, and there is an incredible amount of great music being released every day. But it's only once in a while that an exceptional song is released, and even rarer for it to be reciieveing the amount of attention this song is. But it's well deserved. This song, and Pearce, are future hits.
Overall rating: 5 crowns
