Kaitlyn Baker, at just 20 years old, has already accomplished so much. She has the typical country singer background -- grew up in a small town, wrote songs at a young age, and then came to Nashville later on to pursue her dream of being a country music artist. Baker has opened for many big country artists, including Billy Currington and Brett Eldredge. Every new release she puts out, Baker continues to hone her sound and become more unique and more herself as an artist. This song, "Burn," is one of the tracks on that process.
The first thing I noticed about this song is the fact that it is country. From the banjo in the intro and the fiddle coming in and out throughout the song, and Baker's vocals, this song has modern elements, but thankfully, includes all of the major country instruments. It's refreshing to have a song that can be country again, like this song is.
Lyrically, this song is an empowerment anthem about cheaters. In the song, Baker depicts the story of a women finding her boyfriend cheating, and burning all of his things, representing their love going up in flames. The line "he can't keep it in his pants" was a bit shocking first listening to the song, because of the crudeness of the line. But at this point, after listening to the song so many times, it's one of my favorite parts of the song. Sometimes women just have to say it like it is, which Baker does so well in this song.
Baker's debut album is set to come out sometime this year, and based on this song will be an excellent album. Her strong, yet articulate voice and excellent songwriting demostrates Baker's potential as a country singer. I look forward to what she does next.
Overall rating: 4 crowns
