Kacey Musgraves, as a Queen of Country, is an expert at releasing quality music. Her first album, Same Trailer Different Park was a commercial and critical success, winning Musgraves two Grammys and leading her to the high place in country music she is now. Her single 'Follow Your Arrow" was a rule breaker for country music standards, speaking of smoking Marijuana, and accepting gay marriage and relationships. This song, "Biscuits," the first single off of her sophomore effort, due out sometime this year, echoes some of "Follow Your Arrow"'s feeling, but is a bit more radio friendly. .
Musgraves has not changed much musically from her debut, but she has definitely gotten better. Her lyrics are more clever, and her tunes more catchy. With this track, she takes all the things that people have loved about her in the past and made it a bit more mainstream. By mainstream, I do not mean production wise. This song is country, and not the kind of country on the radio. It has the same kind of production as "Follow Your Arrow," with the more traditionally minded country instrumentals.
The lyrics in this song are the high point. I actually came across this song via a live video taken at a concert a few months ago, and instantly I fell in love with the hook, "mind your own business and life will be gravy." It is so clever, and so Musgraves! However, this song is remarkably similar to her previous hit, "Follow Your Arrow." Although about somewhat different topics, this song still is about being yourself and not caring about what other people think. The production is also similar, and even though Musgraves has improved, this song is just a bit too like her previous work. Hopefully her album will wow me more than this single does.
Overall rating: 3 crowns
