Country duo SPINN recently released their new infectious single, “Crazy For You.” The duo took some time to delve into the making of the track and the meaning of the song to them personally.
Aileen James: Who wrote “Crazy For You” and who produced it?
SPINN: Crazy For You was written by Stephanie and Cheryl Lynn Spinner and produced by Harper James from Degraw Sound in Brooklyn. Impressively enough the only thing Harper didn’t do on this song were the drums and vocals!
What was the process of writing the song? Did it begin with a particular lyric or melody?
The chorus was the first piece of the puzzle. Steph woke up at 5:30am with this hook stuck in her head one day, and it wouldn’t let her go back to sleep until she wrote it down! The chorus was so simple and sweet we knew it was a keeper for us right away.
Where did the inspiration for the song come from?
We’re not saying we’re crazy girls in a crazy world...but maybe some people in our lives might say that phrase happens to describe us perfectly! This song has pieces of ourselves all the way through it, and hopefully it also describes a kind of person that audiences listening can either relate to or compare with a person thats in their lives as well.
What were some influences on the sound/production of the track?
We actually told our producer Harper that we wanted it to sound like ‘happiness and sunshine’. We think he pretty much nailed it! We used a few tracks as examples, “Dibs” by Kelsea Ballerini and “Stay A Little Longer” by Brothers Osborne also, but sunshine was the main goal!
Do you have a favorite lyric?
In the first verse, it’s “Darlin’ if I’m tequila, you’re the lime”. Everyone knows the best part of a tequila shot is the taste of the lime afterwards. It brings balance, And that’s what this song is all about for us.
What does the song mean to you, personally?
We’re always on the go, always plotting something, minds moving a mile a minute. Sometimes it’s important to slow down, take a look around and appreciate the amazing things you have in your life, and that’s what “Crazy For You” means to us.
Why did you chose to release this song as a single?
We knew as soon as we wrote “Crazy For You” that it was going to be one of the first songs we’d release off our upcoming EP. Recording it in the studio was almost effortless because the song has had its own identity from the moment it was created. Crazy For You makes us smile and gives us the “warm and fuzzies”, and whenever we play it live people always go bananas for it, so that made releasing it as a single a no-brainer! And we’re SO happy we did :)
